Visioning

  • How do you develop a picture of your organization’s future that isn’t just a view from the top?
  • Does it seem that everyone has a different idea of what achieving strategic goals means?

Visioning is a group exercise that develops a clear picture of what things will look like and how they will work when goals are achieved.  Visioning is an integral part of strategy, but often neglected.  In part, this happens because it’s assumed that since everyone understands and is working towards strategic goals, that they all have the same end result in mind.  It’s also true that by skipping the visioning process certain unpleasant realities can be temporarily avoided (e.g., most future states are differently structured, creating new roles and eliminating existing ones).  However, when organizations are determined to get the most from the time and resources they invest in thinking about the future, visioning is a necessary first step.
